Material and methods
Study subjects were drawn from 820 patients diagnosed with a first primary cutaneous melanoma, including melanoma in situ, between Jan 1, 1983, and Jan 1, 1995, and registered in the oncology data bank of the University Medical Center in Leiden. From this group multiple melanomas developed in 60 patients. Patient characteristics, melanoma count, anatomic location, and time of diagnosis of each melanoma were reviewed from the hospital chart. Results
The incidence of multiple melanomas was 6.8% (56/820). Of the 56 patients, 23 (41.1%) were male and 33 (58.9%) female. The male/female ratio was 1:1.4. Of the 47 documented patients, percentages of Fitzpatrick skin types were as follows: I, 29.8%; II, 53.2%; III, 14.9%; and IV, 2.1%.

Discussion
The incidence of multiple melanomas in our population (6.8%) correlates well with the incidence reported in previous series2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and the 6.2% reported in patients with a melanoma diagnosed between 1970 and 1980 at the Leiden University Medical Center.29 The mean number of melanomas per patient was 2.8, which was slightly higher than the 2.2 reported in most studies.2, 5, 27
