Just to sum up, obesity is now considered as the second most common cause of cancer after smoking. Moreover, recent data indicates that obesity overcome smoking as the main cause of some of the most common cancers (bowel, kidney, ovarian, endometrium and liver) and could overtake smoking as the biggest cause of cancer in women in twenty years time (The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 2020). Among the numerous and complex mechanisms underlying the strong relation between obesity and cancer development, insulin resistance may play a key role in tumoral initiation and progression.
