It is possible that the low levels of Hsp27 we found in PA and ACC reflect the poorly differentiated nature of these tumors. Hsp60 tissue levels were shown to be decreased in bladder carcinoma (Lebret et al., 2003), adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) (Cappello et al., 2005, 2006), and lung adenocarcinoma (Xu et al., 2011). These tumors had poor prognosis, which was attributed to the low levels of Hsp60.

Nevertheless, recent studies have demonstrated that Hsp60 is also involved in infectious and autoimmune disease progression and particularly in cancer development [24,31–37]. Hsp60 is overexpressed in various tumor cell types [31,38–45], including lymphoma [46,47], and precancerous lesions [41–45]. Furthermore, Hsp60 distribution in malignant cells is different from that in normal cells, showing abnormal accumulation in extramitochondrial sites, as the cytosol, plasma membrane, and secretory vesicles [48–51].

Frequently, the immunopositivity for Hsp60, in cancerous tissue or circulating cancer cells, correlates with a poor prognosis [49,51–53]. In contrast to these findings, we previously found that the loss of Hsp60 immunopositivity can be related to development and progression of bronchial cancer [54], which reflects the variety of roles that Hsp60 can play. In our experimental model, the high levels of Hsp60 likely cause the inhibition of the pC3 activation and the resistance to apoptosis.

Moreover, a high concentration of HSP10 may activate the antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family to inhibit cell apoptosis, which benefits tumorigenesis [4]. Furthermore, the overexpression of HSP10 has been reported in a variety of tumors and nontumor lesions, such as those of the large intestine, ovary, liver, and prostate [8-11]. However, the expression of HSP10 and its clinicopathological/prognostic implications in IDBC have not been reported so far.
