Abstract

Bax and cleaved Bid trigger cytochrome c release from mitochondria during apoptosis. Recent work demonstrates that mitochondrial lipid rather than protein composition is the key determinant in the permeabilization process via a supramolecular complex, suggesting a reevaluation of current paradigms.
