Bioactive substances of cyanobacteria and microalgae: Sources, metabolism, and anticancer mechanism insights
2024, Biomedicine and PharmacotherapyNutraceutical characteristics of the brown seaweed carotenoid fucoxanthin
2020, Archives of Biochemistry and BiophysicsCitation Excerpt :Among the carotenoids evaluated, allenic carotenoids, neoxanthin and Fx, showed the higher activity in the growth reduction of these prostate cancer cells as compared with other kinds of carotenoids without allenic bond, suggesting the importance of allenic bond in the anti-proliferative ability of carotenoids. Fx intake also suppressed the number and growth of tumors in animal models [119–122]. In addition, brown seaweed extract (containing Fx showed chemopreventive activity against the formation of aberrant crypt foci, a preneoplastic marker for colon cancer, in rats [123,124].
Fucoidans: The importance of processing on their anti-tumoral properties
2020, Algal ResearchCitation Excerpt :Purified fucoidans, obtained after a previous preextraction stage with ethanol, showed higher sulfate and fucose levels and lower uronic acid content, and showed a slightly higher growth inhibition on cancer cells than the crude extracts [48,55,164]. The active substances in enzyme-digested fucoidans derived from Mozuku are thought to be low molecular weight compounds such as fucoxanthin [148,190–192]. Song et al. [68] suggested that the synergistic effect of the compounds in the crude extract could also explain their higher potency in vivo.
